BDC invites all clients to attend free seminar on new H & S legislation

The Business Design Centre (BDC) continuously looks to provide value-added services to its event organisers in order to make the organising process at the venue as stress-free as possible. With the recent changes to Health & Safety (H & S) legislation in mind, the BDC invited all of its organisers and contractors to a free half-day seminar on the 7th April.

The seminar covered many topical H & S issues, with special focus on the recent changes to the Corporate Manslaughter Act, which came into force on the 6th April 2008. This was followed by a lunch provided by the BDC.

Bradley Cordes, Head of Projects, said, “The BDC was delighted with the response to our invitation, it showed that our customers are taking H & S as seriously as we are. I believe that this seminar provided a great opportunity the BDC and our clients to learn together and will make the introduction of new safe systems of work and good practices easier to implement, with the support and commitment of everyone involved.”

Attendees included representatives from Single Market Event, The Careers Group and UCAS, together with a member of the Islington Environmental Health Office who commented on the pro-activeness of the BDC and the impressive example that the venue was setting. The seminar was attended by 45 guests all of which have responded very positively to the event, many asking if the BDC will be running any more in future.

BDC believed it was important to organise this event as the changes in legislation have a very significant impact on the events industry. The landmark piece of legislation means that companies and organisations, for the first time, can be found guilty of corporate manslaughter as a result of serious management failures.

The seminar looked at ways and means of changing current procedures to eradicate bad practice, using live case studies as a way to enforce the importance of following the new procedures put in place, which includes the requirement of all risk assessments and method statements to be received from all contractors and exhibitors prior to being allowed access to the venue.
