Countdown to 30: An interview with AVC Live's Charlene Hayes

27.01.2016 Countdown to 30: An interview with AVC Live's Charlene Hayes

If you’ve been following our recent blog feature you will know we are celebrating our 30th birthday in October this year. In a countdown to this great milestone we will be interviewing colleagues, tenants, suppliers and friends of the BDC in our monthly blog article ‘Countdown to 30’. This month we are featuring AVC Live’s Charlene Hayes who has been based at the BDC for over seven years; she tell us what its really like to be part of the team who work on events here at the venue…

Can you tell us a bit about AVC and how long you have had a showroom at the BDC?

“AVC have been based at the BDC since Spring 2008. We are a Technical Production Company, delivering a specialist service spanning 34 years in the industry. Our expertise lies in the provision of technical production services to venues, hotels, corporate clients, event agencies, production companies, PR and communications agencies. We propose, design, plan and execute innovative live event solutions across numerous sectors irrespective of size and scale. We use our experience to ensure that we always present the most innovative, creative and cost effective solution. We offer the creative skills of a top-end Event agency along with the cost saving advantages of owning our own equipment. Our business has evolved to accommodate our client’s needs and we offer a totally integrated service comprising of five key elements; AVC Events, AVC Technical, AVC Scenery, AVC Digital and AVC Video. This means that we can draw on expertise from every corner of our business to give our clients a full mix of services and event professionals.”

You have offices in many locations, what’s it like having your office based here at the BDC?

“There are many advantages and perks to being based in the BDC. The building itself is very iconic and makes for lovely surroundings. You are exposed to many interesting trade shows and exhibitions; I think a firm favourite is the Country Living Spring and Christmas fairs.

We know our neighbours and have a great relationship with them. Wherever possible the individual businesses will try and help each other in both a professional and social capacity. There are events for tenants organised by the BDC. The most notable and fun is the Christmas lunch, whereby BDC staff cook and serve (with the help of the Good Eating Company team) a wonderful lunch with all the trimmings for tenants.

Islington is a great place to socialise and shop. There are so many good restaurants and bars to choose from. Although this doesn’t tend to help our bank accounts!
Lastly but most importantly is our relationship as partners with BDC team. We work together as colleagues and friends. We are all passionate about the venue and we want to do the best for our clients.”

You’ve produced some brilliant events here, what’s been your favourite to work on?

“It has to be the 25 year anniversary party (pictured)! We teamed up with the venue to produce a wonderful evening marking 25 years of the Business Design Centre. The event is just one example of how well we work with the BDC and what we can achieve together as partners.”

How has the venue changed since you started?

“The venue as a business seems to consistently grow and improve. The team are always looking for any change that will improve the experience of tenants and visitors. Most recently the café has had a welcome and wonderful refurbishment. Although I think the most impressive improvement has to be the large windows at the front and back of the building.”

What has the future got in store for AVC Live?

“AVC Live has an exciting future ahead having recently been acquired by global event player PSAV. This acquisition opens up a wider range of services, resources and expertise. This is coupled with our continuous commitment to the research and development of industry trends and new technologies on the market. Keeping abreast of the latest technology on offer is key to the success of our business moving forward and investment in cutting edge equipment is crucial to developing our company proposition. AVC’s philosophy is simple; we aim to provide the highest quality of service to our clients, offering creative and innovative proposals, premium products and state of the art technical solutions.”

Islington’s a great London borough, what’s your favourite local place?

“It’s very hard to choose just one but in summer it’s lovely to spend lunchtimes on the green. That’s something we all very much enjoy doing.”
